Late game/ act 4, I settled for a shield + dagger(Rancour) combo, because that unique dagger gives 25% critical chance, +additional bonuses, which is very good, since as a mage you never use your weapon ever anyways, what you want are good bonuses.

Nah I would do it with Shield + 1 handed melee combo, ideally, though I made use of various different uniques, depending on what was the best option for me depending on stage of the game.
